Certification

Certified by the American Translators Association (ATA) in Japanese-to-English. This certification has been obtained by passing the rigorous ATA translation examination and thereafter maintaining the continuing education requirements. Experience

Independent translator. Translated for clients in North America, Japan and Europe. Patents, office actions, manuals, specifications and reports for electronics, mechanics and other technical fields. Contracts, annual reports, sustainability reports, and press releases for a variety of business needs. Highest quality and reasonable rates.
In-house translator. Worked at NEC facility in Hillsboro, Oregon. Supported implementation of Japanese specifications for automotive electronics production of airbag control systems, antilock brake systems and occupant detection systems. Participated with American and Japanese managers in planning for new products and implementing production processes. Rapidly promoted to production engineer.
Technical translator. Translated for firms in Japan. Began professional translating while in Japan and continued business relationships after returning to the US. Major clients included auto parts makers and factory equipment producers.

Education

Self-improvement. Continuous development of Japanese skills through study, audio listening and reading. Concentration on genuine fluency, which many other Japanese translators consider a negligible side issue. The greater skill produces faster and more accurate understanding of the content in a Japanese document.
Residence in Japan. Language study in the country, with rigorous research of Japanese language formalities as well as social interaction in the language on a daily basis.
University of Washington (Seattle). Intensive Japanese course. Full-day, every day comprehensive Japanese instruction that introduced and developed all aspects of the language, from grammar and reading to verbal skills. Received a high evaluation from the instructor.
Central Washington University (Ellensburg). Graduated from teacher certification program and received teaching certificate in Washington State.
University of California—Davis. B.A. Major: English-Writing. Minor: Classical Greek. Comprehensive instruction on literature and composition, with foreign language learning techniques instilled by study of Greek. Fostered excellent writing skills and laid foundation for rapid progress in learning Japanese.

Business Founder and Developer

Business founder and product developer. Founded Blue Sea Press, a company dedicated to helping students learn the Japanese language. Products include Kanji Learning Today (an online course for learning the Japanese characters), Japanese Accent (a description of the accent system), and Kanjifind (an electronic dictionary). Educator

Maintains active State of Washington Education Certificate. Continues to teach at public secondary schools on an occasional basis.

Additional Skills

CAT (Computer Assisted Translation) operator. Skilled use of Trados and other tools.
Website developer. Has engaged in bilingual website development since early days of Internet. All development has been performed at the source code level. Added PHP skills in 2018. Some JavaScript exposure.
Database developer. Created many databases using FileMaker Pro. Most databases include Japanese language data storage.
Multiplatform operator. Currently uses both Macintosh and Windows computers. Major applications for both platforms, including Microsoft Office, FileMaker, text editors, others.
Continuous Japanese language development. Reading, writing, listening, speaking.
